45th Lorient Interceltic Festival - 7 - 16 August 2015.
Lorient Interceltic Festival (LIF) celebrates its 45th anniversary! Since its creation in 1971, the Festival succeeded in turning Brittany and the city of Lorient into a true cross-cultural place. It has become over the years an unmissable event for all the Celtic nations.
This year, the two smallest countries of the Celtic arc are the guests of honour: Cornwall and the Isle of Man. To really put the focus on the two guests of honour, a shared symbol was chosen: the sword. The sword evokes the Celtic legends of the two nations: King Arthur and his sword, Excalibur; Tristan and Iseult sleeping in the cave with Tristan’s sword separating the two lovers, and Mannanan Mac Lir, a warrior god from Celtic mythology, who wielding his sword, Freggyrtagh, gave his name to the Isle of Man. All of these legends endow this year’s festival with a veritable aura of magic.
Initiated 45 years ago out of the wish of its founders to contribute to the development of Breton music and culture but also to open to other Celtic nations, the LIF has managed to become an internationally recognised event. ver 10 days and 10 nights, the festival welcomes over 4.000 artists artists from the main Celtic countries: the Isle of Man, Ireland, Cornwall, Scotland, Wales, Galicia, Asturias, Acadia and of course, Brittany! This musical event, which shows the dynamism and openness of Celtic cultures, also presents events in dance, literature, visual arts, films, history, etc.
THE GRAND PARADE OF THE CELTIC NATIONS Major event of LIF, the Grand Parade of the Celtic Nations is following a new route, departing from the Avenue de la Perrière and culminating in a show- stopping finale at the Stade du Moustoir
CARLOS NUÑEZ WITH THE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND THE BAGAD DE LORIENT This show synthesizes his twenty year career, his beginning at LIF in 1984, his various concerts with the best artists of the Celtic scene, a love story between traditional and classical music. Carlos Núñez, with the Symphony Orchestra of Brittany and the Bagad Lorient, a show not to be missed.
KILA - CALAN Between Pipes and djembe, Irish and Gaelic songs, the seven musicians of the band Kila are superstars of Irish music. They participated in the soundtrack of Tomm Moore’s film Song of the Sea. In the first part of the concert, the five Welsh musicians from Calan will play contemporary sounds.
DANÚ, SHOOGLENIFTY & THE DHOL DRUMMERS OF RAJASTHAN Danú is an Irish band mixing traditional music with a contemporary repertoire. Twenty years ago, the Festival gave them their first real concert. After seven albums acclaimed by critics, the band returns to Lorient to celebrate its 20th anniversary. We will also celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Scottish band Shooglenifty who wished to collaborate with The Dhol Drummers of Rajasthan for the occasion.
